Das Lied „Polly Wolly Doodle“ wurde von „Dan Emmett’s Virginia Minstrels“ in New York’s Bowery Amphitheatre im Februar 1843 erstmals live gespielt. Kompostion und Text werden daher in manchen Quellen Dan Emmett (1815–1904) zugeschrieben. Gedruckt wurde das Lied erstmals in einem Harvard Studentenliederbuch 1880.   (Wikipedia) .

„Dieses amerikanische Volkslied war beliebt seit Mitte der 1850er Jahre. Die Verfasser scheint vollständig unbekannt, obwohl manche vermuten dass es sich im Original um ein Lied der schwarzen Amerikaner handelt. Das Lied ist eins der meistgespielten Lieder der „Minstrel Shows“. Kurz vor dem Bürgerkrieg konnte man es in jedem Theater, auf jedem Rivernboat und in jeder Stadt hören. “
